How LM Studio works

What is LM Studio?

It's a desktop app for running language models on your own computer. The documentation says it's available for macOS, Windows and Linux.1 Its page lists what you can do with it, including a simple and flexible chat interface and a search and download function that works through Hugging Face.1

Details here were checked on 28 October 2026 and may move.1

How does it get a model onto my machine?

Inside the app. LM Studio says it comes with a built-in model downloader.2 You search by keyword, or paste a full Hugging Face web address into the search bar.2

You'll often see several versions of one model with names like Q3_K_S. These are different quantization levels, and the page gives a rule of thumb for picking one.2 The quantization page repeats it with the trade-offs.

The app handles searching, downloading and chatting in one window.

Want the files stored somewhere else? The docs say you can change the models directory under My Models.2 Model files are big, so a roomy drive helps.

Can it work with documents and other tools?

The docs list a few extras. One is chatting with documents. Another is connecting MCP servers and using them with local models. A third is serving local models on OpenAI-like endpoints, so other programs can talk to them.1

Treat each extra as something to check before you rely on it. The privacy page says why.

How is an app different from a command-line tool?

A command-line tool takes typed commands in a terminal window. An app gives you windows, buttons and a chat box. That's the main difference.

LM Studio's docs list a chat interface and a search and download function.1 Ollama's quickstart says you can open its app or get started from a terminal.3 The Ollama side is on the Ollama page.

Which feels better is up to you. This site doesn't rank them.

Does LM Studio have a terminal side too?

Yes. The docs describe a command-line tool called lms, used for chat, model downloads, daemon management, server control and publishing.1

There's also llmster, the headless version of LM Studio, which needs no desktop app.1 LM Studio says it can be run as a background service without the GUI.4 The docs call it ideal for servers or any machine where you don't need a GUI.1 Setting that up is a job for whoever looks after your IT.

What will it run on?

The list covers Mac, Windows and Linux machines. On Macs, Apple Silicon is needed, and Intel-based Macs are currently not supported.5 The memory advice is on the hardware page.

Can I use it without the internet?

Mostly, once a model is downloaded. The details of what still needs a connection are on the privacy page.

Is the model free to use at work?

The app and the model are separate things. Each model has its own licence, so check it before using one for the business. See open-weight model licences.
